FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What Kantronics TNC models will you repair?

A: KAM, KAM+, KAM (enhanced), KPC-2, KPC-3, KPC-4, KPC-9612 and the Dataengine.

Q: What services do you provide as part of the repair?

A: Usually I find that the TNC is either totally unresponsive or just prints gibberish on the screen. I will first upgrade the power supply.  If this does not solve the problem, I will move on to whatever else is necessary to repair the TNC and bring it up to original factory standards.

Q: How much will it cost to fix my TNC?

A: The cost to the customer is $35.00 flat rate for the repair, plus USPS return shipping costs. I usually do not do a parts charge unless the CPU needs to be replaced.  Replacing the CPU is labor intensive (64 closely spaced leads) and replacement CPUs are in short supply. Fortunately, bad CPU problems are rare, so most customers should expect to pay the flat $35 rate plus shipping. I prefer payments via PayPal, sent to my PayPal address of but check or money order works too, I do not accept Whataburger certificates anymore! :-)

Q: What type of test equipment do you use?

A: My test equipment includes a Tektronix 7603RM Oscilloscope, an Agilent 8924C Analog communications monitor and SMT Solder/Desolder stations.

Q: How long will it take to repair my TNC?

A: The normal turnaround time is usually about 1 week.

Q: Do you offer a warranty on your repair work?

A: I warranty the repair for 30 days following delivery to the customers address.

Q: How do I send in my TNC for repair?

A: Contact me and I will give you more details regarding shipping and the repair process.  FYI, I prefer USPS Shipping.

Q: Do you have available update ROMS for legacy products?

A: I am now able to supply the last versions of firmware for the following Kantronics TNCs:

  • KPC 2 version 5.0
  • KPC 3 version 8.2
  • KPC 4 version 5.0
  • KAM version 6.1 (includes pactor)
  • KAM+ version 8.2
  • Dataengine 2.0
